The Hungarian movie “Son of Saul” won the Oscar for best foreign film.

By now the film (produced in 2015) received over 30 nominations and won 23 film awards.

We remind you that this is the debut feature film of Hungarian director László Nemes.

“Son of Saul” (2015),  Hungarian: “Saul fia”, came to the attention of the 88th Oscar ceremony for its outstanding displaying of Holocaust drama.

“Son of Saul” closely follows the experience of a Jew named Saul Ausländer, prisoner camp at Auschwitz in 1944. His role is played by Géza Rörhig. Saul passes through overwhelming moments in human terms, he being forced to burn the bodies of other Jewish prisoners.

But his moral survival hope appears when he tries to save from the flames the body of a boy, treating him like his son and trying to arrange with a rabbi a clandestine burial ceremony. Surprisingly, the film of 107 minutes pursues only a day and a half in the life of Saul Ausländer character.

“The Holocaust has become, over the years, an abstraction. For me, it’s more a face, a human face; let’s not forget this face”, said director László Nemes.

“Son of Saul” has already won a Golden Globe in January for the Best Foreign Language Film, and the The Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival 2015.  The film sold more than 100,000 tickets in Hungarian cinemas by last Wednesday – this being an extraordinary success in the little European country.

The 88th Academy Awards ceremony took place at the Dolby Theater, Hollywood, on Sunday, February 28, 2016.

We recommend that you watch “Son of Saul” as soon as the feature will be accessible.
